ENVIRONMENT GAINS A CHANCE
AS GAS PRICES TOP $5.11
IN HAWAII

June 6, 2008.  The average price was $4.14/gallon on June 4, 2008.  However, just two days later, Lanai reported $5.11/gallon amidst the tears of those who guard the gates of the past, while the longtime prayers of some are finally being answered with an opportunity for a major lifestyle change.

The environment, birds, and people suffering from gas fumes and the resultant air pollution with cancer-causing particulate matter, have a chance to be healed through innovative and new modes of transportation.  The particulate matter works similarly to cigarette smoke to enter the lungs, but the particles are so small that they cannot be cleaned out by the lungs, and the irritants eventually become a major cause of lung cancer (reference to scientific research articles will follow soon). If you are concerned about exposure to cigarette smoke, then you need to be multi-concerned about your exposure to car exhaust fumes.

The creative mind is capable of inventing a new kind of  transportation. For those who suffer from the barreling gas fumes along the Ala Wai, the lessening traffic is a good thing, and some people even discovered that they can walk and lose weight as well as save gas.

Now, perhaps, we can make the Ala Wai into a plaza with romantic boat rides for tourists.

Some businesses on the mainland have reported to be changing their schedules to four work days instead of five, but not here in Hawaii where working conditions are challenging and most people work two jobs. The next step may be to slow down the work machine altogether to focus on quality family life.  Perhaps the high prices in gas are a blessing after all.
