KILAUEA LAVA FLOWS INTO OCEAN

July 2008. The return of weak trade winds cleared out some of the toxins and brought patches of blue skies, but the previous two days were challenging.

Many homes do not have air conditioning, and these people have felt the worse effects, but also, many hotels and restaurants have open lobbies and archways.  With year round warm weather there is no need for walls and heaters.

In some schools, the trade winds offer the only cooling to the hot days.  Recently students have protested at the capitol that when the trade winds leave, the classrooms reach temperatures as high as 90 degrees making it crucial to obtain funding for air conditioning.

When the trade winds leave, the effects are devastating in many ways, until their return.

Tourists in good health head directly to the Big Island to see the active Kilauea volcano despite the toxic vapors, and others just wait it out and find many other things to do, because it is often just a day away from blue skies and the return of the trade winds to take back their domain and clear the air.
