July 24, 2008.  Seven Pacific Rim nations along with the United Kingdom are participating in Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC), a major maritime exercise of war games being conducted in the ocean off the coast of Hawaii. This year's war games are a part of a series of RIMPAC exercises conducted periodically since 1971.

Recently, in Waikiki the presence of the military seemed to be everywhere:  they were seen in uniform at the grocery stores, standing in line to get coffee, walking down the streets, and passing by in cars, but all going in different directions.  It was as if the headquarters had moved to Waikiki.

This year's war games included an Australian submarine, HMAS Waller, that test fired a new torpedo, MK 48 Mod 7 Common Broadband Sonar System, which was used to sink a decommissioned US warship off the cost of Hawaii.

RIMPAC brings together military forces from Australia, Canada, Chile, Peru, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The multinational Rim of the Pacific exercise (RIMPAC) is intensive warfare training, and is a Coalition Force comprised of eight nations, over 40 ships, six submarines, 160 aircraft and almost 19,000 Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Soldiers and Coastguardsmen will participate in the training operations, who will return to Pearl Harbor for a short pause before beginning the final journey home at the end of the month.

RIMPAC is intended to enhance the tactical proficiency for the benefit of all participating nations in a wide array of combined operations at sea, and, helps to promote stability in the Pacific Rim region.
