OBAMA GREW UP
AMIDST THE ONGOING
GAMBLING EPIDEMIC
IN HAWAII

August 25, 2008.  Gambling has reached epidemic proportions in Hawaii and has been going on a long time.  If you ask anyone at random, many will say that they often travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to gamble.  Those who are homeless often talk of moving to Nevada to live because "that is where all the money is," as they perceive.  Why is Hawaii so obsessed with gambling?

It is not surprising to hear that Barack Obama gambles:  "He is a good -- but cautious -- poker player who joined other lawmakers in Springfield, Illinois, for weekly games.  They dubbed their group 'the Committee." [Associated Press, Aug. 2008].

All kinds of gambling takes place in Hawaii, and most of it is underground.  Surprisingly, there is no lottery in Hawaii.  A man advised me that he makes his living running "cock fights."  When the wrong person finds out, it is shut down, but locals describe the legal system in Hawaii as "corrupt" and "pitiful" which favors the corrupt defendants, but also makes it impossible to overcome any of the problems suffered by the common people (which is the majority) in Hawaii.

Routine flights to Nevada by groups are taken so frequently that it is the cheapest route to get to the Mainland.  It is a regular trip every few months for many locals.  Just like one on the mainland takes a trip to the beach, Hawaii residents take a trip to Las Vegas.  For many, the trip is like playing the game of lottery, it offers hope in the midst of widespread poverty.  There is an ongoing joke that even the Governor of Hawaii is on Food Stamps.  It is the only place I have seen even doctors and lawyers new to the island struggling with broken down offices and even renting space in warehouses.

Most professionals, however, leave rather than fighting this broken economy which means that the good doctors and quality lawyers are so few that they only service the wealthy who can afford their extremely high prices. It is terrible place to do business because most of the people are poor and cannot support even basic needs.  That is why Hawaii depends (wrongly) upon tourism.

The prospect of ever owning a home in Hawaii is so unreal, that locals call their small apartment-condo a "house."  You have to be a millionaire to buy a real home, or many members of the family have to pool all their resources together with each holding down two jobs or more.

Hawaii is a land of no opportunities for anyone other than the wealthy.  There is "no" middle class.

It is not surprising that Barack Obama plays gambling.  Everyone who grew up in Hawaii, such as Obama, has suffered the severe discrimination against the poor and the deep separation between the servantship Poor Class and the ruling Wealthy Class, that function very much like a caste system in denying even human respect and dignity in society.  Unless you inherit or win a game in Las Vegas, Nevada, there is no hope of ever working your way out of poverty in Hawaii.

Therefore, money is not just attached to the ability to buy things, but it determines your own value as a person in Hawaii.  But, this is merely an imposition of ignorance by the wealthy to make servants out of the common people, while at the top where the wealthy are, is a solid steel wall to keep you out of the tight competition for power.  Once you are at the top, you gain the "right" to abuse others who are beneath you (which is morally and ethically wrong but it is perceived as a social privilege that signifies achievement of power to abuse others).

Employers are the most abusive I have ever seen anywhere.  They require you to be committed to them 24 hours/day and you must be submissive to all their demands including even to get a drink of water or to make a phone call to your spouse. They are verbally abusive also, and surprising the worse abusers are the women.

The salaries are extremely low and many businesses hire several family members who subsequently keep you from progressing up the ladder of success.  Because many work several jobs just for basic food and shelter, there is a job shortage and heavy competition with  highly aggressive employees and a lot of lies and raging fights to keep you from overpowering their position.

Nevertheless,  you could work five jobs, but never become a millionaire so that you could buy a home in Hawaii.

Further, the apartments, are not kept up with repairs, even though they are the most expensive anywhere which adds to the frustration of working so hard to achieve so few benefits and end up coming home to a run-down apartment that you have to share with several people.

Therefore, obsession with money has driven a major segment of Hawaiian residents to gamble as the only hope of obtaining enough money to overcome their immovable poverty accompanied by abusive servantship, poor living conditions, abusive employers, and extreme competition for low-paying jobs.
