BIRD
GOES FISHING
WITH MAN

March 13, 2009.  This incredible bird with a dangling white feather pony tail on the back of his head, incredibly goes fishing in the Ala Wai using human strategy to catch his prey.

Many people love to feed the doves, but since it is against the law, they feed the fish instead.

As I was walking along the Ala Wai, I saw this bird watching patiently as a man arrived and fumbled through his backpack. He then took out some bread and began to crumble it up.

At first, I thought, this bird must be waiting to eat some bread.

Instead, however, as the man threw bread down to the fish in the water, this bird would catch the fish as it came up to feed on the bread.

What incredible strategy that transcends three different species.

I asked the man if this was a coincidence, and he said, "No, this bird has learned to go fishing whenever someone throws bread."

It takes more time to hunt fish who are running away. I have seen this bird species walking in the water for a long time without catching anything at all. The fish ordinarily will hide underwater when they see the bird.

However, this bird saves a lot of time and energy when bread is thrown into the water as bait, and the fish unknowingly comes to the surface and is eaten by the bird before it can escape.
