USS PORT ROYAL * * * *
February 9, 2009. The USS Port Royal was set free early this morning at 2:40 a.m. Divers have determined that there is no threat to the environment even though there was a small amount of fuel leakage. The warship is headed back to dock at Pearl Harbor.
A thorough investigation of the environment and the cause is underway while the captain of the ship has been relieved of his duties.
USS PORT ROYAL
WARSHIP February 6, 2009. The USS Port Royal, a huge naval warship based in Pearl Harbor, has run aground and is trapped in the living reefs near Honolulu International Airport. All attempts to free this 9,000 ton vessel have failed.
This $1 Billion Navy Missile Cruiser based at Pearl Harbor was practicing a military maneuver today when it became stuck in the jagged living reefs about a half mile off shore.
This reminds me how far out the shallow water is with the reef floor which requires special protective shoes when going surfing, unless you know the area well enough to avoid the reefs.
There is no one place where the reefs are located, but rather, they form in different areas around the shore and extend out into the ocean. There may be deep ocean, then reefs, then deep ocean again. Locals become familiar with the reef areas and know where to surf and swim. There is no doubt that the Hawaii ocean is very dangerous. Too many adventuresome tourists are fooled by the surface beauty that captivates them and brings them down to the ocean depths.
Waikiki Beach is the safest place to swim. However, on the beaches located on both sides of Waikiki are areas where local surfers like to go and which have many pockets of reefs. This allows them to go way out into the ocean without getting into deep water.
You can actually walk far out into the Pacific Ocean because of the reefs, but which is also dangerous because your foot can get caught in the reef.
Further, when an unexpected large wave comes along, you can get knocked out by the massive pressure pushing you under and into the hard jagged reefs. This is the single most common cause of injuries while swimming and surfing. The reefs are hard and sharp, and yet, they are living. A great survival defense that keeps you away.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the warship got stuck because the reefs are way out there far from the shoreline and form the jagged living ground dangerously solid as boulders and hidden under the Pacific Ocean surface.
The USS Port Royal is technologically advanced with the MK-41 Vertical Launch System (VLS), and is capable of firing tomahawk and standard (SM2 Block IV-A) missiles.
The concern by
Hawaii residents, environmentalists, and the U.S. Navy is that when
this warship is freed,
there is a high potential for a major oil spill. In fact, how
do you free a 9,000 ton warship loaded with nuclear weapons and
huge tanks of oil? So far, no one knows . . . * * * *
